Physical therapy is a remarkable discipline that has the power to transform lives. This is my story of how physical therapy has become a beacon of hope during a challenging chapter of my life. It is a testament to the dedication and expertise of my physical therapist and the incredible resilience of the human body.
It all began with an upcoming birthday. I will be 73 years old in March. I am a realist. I am in the last chapter of my life. I don't want it written with pain.
I have suffered with my apparently arthritic hips (doctor diagnosed) since my mid 40's. Pain and stiffness have been my constant companions. I have endured hip & back pain for years, sometimes even unable to carry out daily activities. Early on, I went to doctors, refused pain meds and chalked it up to getting older. Buried myself in work and chose to ignore the pain, relying on Aleve when it became too much to bear.
A massive heart attack at almost 72 awakened a requirement to seriously get physical. Walking was a must, but I was in so much pain, it was near to impossible. If my heart was to mend, the rest of my body had to participate. Cardiac Rehab was not readily available, so I was on my own. I bought a walking machine, I counted steps, I tried but the struggle was real. I needed less pain to do more.
After much contemplation, I decided to seek physical therapy. I was determined to regain my strength and mobility. My initial consult with Mary was both enlightening and reassuring. She explained the process, set realistic goals, and instilled in me a sense of optimism.
Mary's expertise is invaluable. She identified a left leg that was substantially shorter and fitted me with a lift. Almost immediately, I began to feel a significant reduction in pain and a newfound sense of strength. Activities that once seemed impossible, like climbing stairs and walking long distances, became achievable again. After just two weeks, my hip and lower back pan were gone! I still cannot believe it! I am actually sleeping through the night and for the first time since my 40's, I've no hip or lower back pain!
As the weeks progress, I notice subtle improvements in my neck, shoulders and knees. She has incorporated a variety of techniques, including targeted exercises, manual therapy, and modalities like heat and cold therapy.
The progress I have made is a testament to the effectiveness of the physical therapy program and my commitment to the process.
One of the most remarkable aspects of my journey is the boost of self confidence that physical therapy brought. As I regain my physical abilities, I also regain my self-assurance. The support and encouragement from Mary has played a pivotal role in this transformation.
What really stands out to me during my physical therapy journey is the holistic approach to healing. It isn't just about the physical exercises; it's about addressing the mind and spirit as well. Mary emphasizes the importance of mental resilience, stress management, and maintaining a positive outlook. I am confident that this comprehensive approach contributes greatly to my overall well-being.
I owe a debt of gratitude to Mary Bengoa and her team. Their expertise, dedication, and unwavering support are instrumental in my recovery. They are not just healthcare providers; they are partners in my journey to healing. Their commitment to their profession and their patients is truly commendable.
I hope my story can serve as a source of inspiration for others who may be embarking on their own physical therapy journeys. With the right support and determination, anything is possible.
THANK YOU BENGOA PHYSICAL THERAPY!
